A Fashionable First Lady

Mary Todd Lincoln (1863)

I don't know a lot about her but I find her very interesting. She made it a personal mission to redecorate the White House, which apparently needed some serious style updates. Congress gave her $20,000 and she overspent by $6,858. What would Tim Gunn say about her going over budget?

She went to New York in a $900 carriage to do her shopping. If New York Fashion Week had been around back then she definitely would have been front row at every show. But it was all about Europe at that time.

She didn't care what people thought. She bought the Parisian wall paper, had custom gowns made for her, and wore fancy jewelry no matter what it cost.
